Today I had the pleasure of fishing with a group from Houston Texas. I picked them up from the cabins this morning at safe light and we headed south across Barataria Bay towards the barrier islands looking for speckled trout. We had a slight breeze out of the south at about five miles per hour and the lake was calm. We arrived on the south side about six o’clock and the birds were working everywhere. Ever though we know the birds work the smaller speckled trout, it is still a good sign to see the barrier islands so alive with bait feed. The bigger speckled trout seem to have moved back in from the gulf last week and we are starting to catch some nice trout in about five feet of water on top of the oyster reefs. For a few weeks we were not catching any trout in the shallow waters because of the heat and the water temperature. I find the speckled trout will kind of move in and out during this time of the summer as the water temperature tends to get close to the ninety degree mark. Anyway we moved the boat two times before we found a nice trout bite and the guys went to work. They started catching some nice speckled trout as fast as the live shrimp were hitting the water. The bite was strong and the size of the speckled trout was running about fifteen to sixteen inches. I would say the bite lasted about two hours and then it just shut down. Good thing the guys were fishing hard during those two hours and was able to box up a box of beautiful speckled trout. We did manage to catch a bull red during the time we were catching the trout and of course Joe had to brag on catching the biggest fish. It made for a great photo session and we through him back over to fight another day. The guys helped me clean the speckled trout when we got back to the cabins so it didn’t take us long to get all the trout cleaned bagged up and iced down for there ride home. What a perfect morning it was this morning to be on the water catching speckled trout. Thanks fellows and I do look forward to our next trip.
